To the Woman Who Wants to Have It All, While Wearing Stilettos

When I was deciding on a name for my blog, a friend suggested stiletto lawyer.  I loved the image it evoked - a strong, ambitious working wife and mother who managed to do it all while looking great and balancing herself on a pair of Sex and the City worthy stilettos.  As long as I can remember, I wanted to be that woman who had it "ALL."  I spent a lot of time anticipating how I would one day balance a career, a husband, children, a home, and me.  I borderline obsessed over it.

Then I had kids, and I felt so overwhelmed by all of the different responsibilities and parts of my life. I was an exhausted mess.  Very far from my vision of the woman who had it "ALL."  At points I worried that I would never find that balance, but then I learned to adjust my expectations.  I also came to the realization that the woman who has it "ALL" does three essential things:  (1) she learns to be as efficient as possible, (2) she delegates, and, most important of all, (3) she learns to choose her definition of "ALL" very carefully (unless she wants that definition to include a mental breakdown).

So since part of having a blog is that you get to give unsolicited advice, here is my advice for the mom who fantasizes about doing it "ALL" in stilettos:

1.  Perfect Your Balancing Act:  I try to be as efficient as possible.  Sometimes my efficiency has to do with me becoming better at something (like learning how to leave the house with two children - that could be an Olympic event; getting better at menu planning; putting better organizational systems in place).  I try to learn as much as I can from others.  Sometimes my efficiency is accomplished by overlapping my goals.  No time to exercise, spend time with kids, and have me time with friends?  Take a walk around a lake with your friends and your kids.  Turn on a dance video game or have a dance party with your kids.  No time to cook dinner and spend time with kids?  Have kids be your special helpers and turn cooking into a family activity that both teaches your children how to take care of themselves one day and is super fun!  Also, now that my kids are getting a little older, I have them help with clearing the table, cleaning up after themselves.  They are learning good habits, and we are all pitching in so there's less work for mom and dad to do.

2.  Get Support:  I have to admit that it's been a long time since I've worn stilettos.  It's taken me some time, but I have finally learned that it is never a good idea to make things more difficult for yourself then they need to be, and frankly, these days I need a lot more support.  I need a freaking platform wedge, and that wedge is my family and friends - my community.  My community is a crucial part of my life.  Hillary Clinton was right:  It really does take a village, and I am starting to learn that it is so important to choose the members of your village wisely.  I rely so much on the kindness of my family and friends, and I also try to spread kindness to others.  One of the best things I have learned from becoming a mother is to accept the help of others (and after becoming a mother to two kids, I have also learned to ask for help).  That was a really hard thing for me to do, especially because one might call me controlling, but it was so freeing to accept help and to learn to delegate to others.  In order to properly delegate, I had to focus on the fact that all that matters is that I don't have to do it.  If I delegate to my husband or someone else, they get to do it their way.  If I absolutely needed it to be my way, I don't delegate it.  I also try, to the best I can, to support others in my community as well.  Sometimes a small gesture (like making/picking up a meal for a friend who just had a baby or who is having a rough week) can really help someone out.

3.  Choose Your Definition of "All" Very Carefully (Or Learning How to Drop Plates and Shout Opa!):  This has been the hardest change for me.  My eyes are bigger than my arms.  I want to take on so much and balance so many plates, but I have to be realistic about my schedule.  Like Elsa reminds me (quite frequently), sometimes I have to just let it go.  More importantly, sometimes I have to drop a plate and learn to shout "Opa!" as it falls.  Sometimes it is an easy plate to drop (e.g., hiring a cleaning crew).  Sometimes it is really difficult.  When deciding what to cut out, I think about both how important it is to my kids, my husband, my friends, or me, as well as about how much my kids, husband, friends, or me enjoy it.

Sometimes I have to drop something because I realize the only good thing about it is the picture I have in my head.  For example, I thought having dinner together as a family was a very important part of being a family.  Before I even had children, I stressed and stressed about how I was going to balance my work schedule and commute to make it home for dinner every night.  With my son it was never an issue because he liked to go to bed late and sleep in when he was a baby.  But when my daughter came along it was tough because she liked to go to bed early, which meant dinner had to be moved to a time that I could never be home for.  When I stressed to come home early, it was always chaos.  The kids would scream most of the time from being cranky from their day.  It was hard to get them to all sit still around the table.  My daughter just wanted me to hold her, because she hadn't seen me all day.  It took some time for me to realize that I was bending over backwards to do something that wasn't working.  So, I let the dinner plate fall.  Instead, we started having breakfast together.  That way we still have a meal together, but it is a time when we were all home and the kids weren't exhausted and melting down.  It became enjoyable.  It was quality time worth taking.  We always make sure to have dinner together on Friday nights for Shabbat, and I look forward to that all week, but for the rest of the week, I am happy not to be stressing out about making something work that just isn't workable right now.  If when my kids get older that changes, we will adjust.  I can always pick a plate back up later if things change.

One word of caution when dropping plates:  don't just drop the plates that are for you.  You must keep a plate or three for yourself, and you must not feel guilty about it.  Many mom's will easily drop the plates that are for them, and will give their time to their work, kids, husband, friends, etc.  This is not healthy by any means.  Lots of my friends complain that their husbands take free time for themselves without even giving a second thought, but that they would kill for a break.  While perhaps there is some merit to those complaints, I actually think the men may have this one right.  When you are on an airplane and the stewards tell you to put your own oxygen masks on before putting them on your children - I'm pretty sure that message is for moms (not the dad's), because mom's typically think of helping their kids before providing themselves with the oxygen they need to breathe.  But here's the thing - if you don't have oxygen, you can't breathe, and therefore you are of no help to your children or anyone else.  You must keep a plate or three for yourself.  You must take care of yourself before you can take care of others.  Also, I don't think we are setting good examples for our children if we are showing them that parenting is all about self-sacrifice and loosing yourself in the process.

If you really are juggling too many plates, try perfecting your balancing act before you drop all the plates that are for you.  For example, I think it's important to have a creative outlet to express yourself and unwind.  I, however, happen to have several hobbies I love, and I cannot find time for them all (hence why there are so few blog posts on my blog!).  I particularly love to cook, entertain, take pictures, and scrapbook.

With cooking, it is hard for me to find the time to cook.  It is important that my family eats healthy, and I really, really enjoy cooking.  It's also a great way to spend time with the kids, or have some much needed me time at the end of a stressful day when the kids are in bed sleeping (while helping out my family).  While I do make cooking a priority, and I don't drop that plate, I make several adjustments to the way I cook.  First and foremost, I meal plan so that I don't waste time trying to figure out what to make.  When it comes to the actual cooking, I usually cook with my kids on the weekend, or I cook dinner the night before after my kids are sleeping so that I don't have to be home early to cook dinner.  I also don't make anything that is difficult or takes too much time to make.

With photography and scrapbooking, I have found an easy adjustment.  I take lots of pictures of my kids, and I do digital shutterfly scrapbooks online (which are much quicker than the handmade kind).  So that was an easy plate to keep!

However, other times I have to drop something I love because it just isn't practical (or enjoyable) anymore, like entertaining.  I love to entertain, but I do not have the free time to entertain as much as I would like, on the scale that I would like.  So when it comes to my children's birthdays, I get my fix for entertaining, and I try to make the times I do entertain really special.  Also, when I entertain I keep things very, very simple (and try to hide how simple it really all is).

Our Little Mermaid Is One!

Theme - Little Mermaid/Under the Sea:
There are so many great themes to choose from for a little girl's party.  I always wanted to do a girly under the sea party, and since my daughter has red hair, I figured it would be fun to throw in some Ariel for good measure.

The Decor

I tied balloons to golf tees, and I placed them at different heights (from shortest to tallest) on both sides of the path leading up to the front door.  I also set up a bubble machine.  I wanted our guests to feel like they were going "under the sea" with the water getting deeper and deeper.

Then I hung curled ribbon from the ceiling.  When I was in a sorority, we used to cover the ceilings in curled ribbon for rush (to create the effect that the ceiling was covered in balloons).  I loved the festivity of the ribbons.  I also have fond memories of sitting on the couch with my sorority sisters curling lots and lots of ribbon.  Because I did not have hundreds of sorority sisters at my disposal to curl ribbon, I tried to keep the ribbon in strategic areas instead of covering the whole ceiling.  I had a lot of help from friends who came over and hung out while we curled lots and lots of ribbon!  My kids loved watching the transformation as more and more ribbon went up.  They also liked playing with the ribbon!

I wanted to hang fish or other sea life from the ribbon, so it looked like fishes swimming in the water.  I had a hard time finding something online.  There were lots of paper cut outs, but none of them were in the colors of my party, and most of them didn't look great.  I did not want to spend a fortune to get pretty fish, and I did not have time to make fish.

Then I got lucky!  I went to Target to check out the Christmas clearance sale, thinking maybe I could find some ornaments that looked like bubbles and to see if any chance they had sea life ornaments on sale.  I didn't really expect to find anything, but I dug through the bins.  I could not believe my luck when I found sequin fish and whales.  I cleaned out every Target in my area of their fish and whale ornaments.  The cashiers all must have assumed that I was decorating my Christmas tree full of sequin fish and whales.  They all looked at me like I was crazy (one even commented "hmm, you like fish, huh"), but it was worth the judgmental stares I got at each checkout line.  I was so happy with how it turned out!

I also got under the sea and little mermaid wall decals.  I didn't want Ariel all over the place, so I put up under the sea decals on most of the walls, and placed Ariel strategically around the house (so you didn't see her more than once in any room).

I find decals are a great affordable way to add decor to a party, and they are so easy to remove from the walls they can be reused later (my kids' bathroom is very likely to get an under the sea makeover soon and Ariel has been added to the walls of the playroom).

To continue the under the sea feel outside, I tied lots of balloons to golf tees and spread them around the edge of our yard so that they looked like bubbles.  I also had a very large bounce house that had a little mermaid theme and that helped add to the decor outside.

A good friend help me make a tutu for my daughter's highchair.  Then we strung some of the extra fish ornaments from the tutu to tie in the under the sea theme.

Finally, I got turquoise linens for the tables to add to the under the sea theme.  I filled small fish bowls with goldfish (these were actually the same centerpieces I used for my son's first birthday).

The Food

The menu consisted of:

  • Submarine Sandwiches (decorated with Little Mermaid cupcake toppers)

  • Cheese Pizza
  • Pasta
  • Chinese Chicken Salad (with chicken on the side)

  • Israeli Couscous with Dried Cherries and Apples

  • Potato Salad
  • Edamame and Carrots with ranch and onion dip

  • Fruit Salads (strawberries with kiwi, cantaloupe with grapes, honeydew with blueberries, pineapple with raspberries, and watermelon)

I never can find the time to do lots of printables, but I love food signs.  It avoids everyone having to ask you what something is.  These days there are so many different allergies and food preferences, so I think guests really want to know what it is they might be eating.  One of my favorite pinterest finds were the idea of buying corner tiles from Home Depot and using them for food signs.  They are both easy to use and reusable!  This time, I decided to add a picture from the invitation of my daughter as a mermaid.

I also did a goldfish snack bar.  I filled buckets with different flavors of goldfish (original, pizza, parmesan, pretzel, natural colors, and best of all - smores!), yogurt stars, non-dairy yogurt melts, and baby mum-mums. Who knew how many flavors of goldfish there are!  I also had to go bags on the table so guests could make a to-go snack before they headed home.  Needless to say, I have a lot of left over goldfish (good thing my son wants a shark party!)

I wanted to get beach buckets to put the fish in, but I had a hard time finding the colors I wanted.  A friend was kind enough to let me borrow some buckets she used for her daughter's first birthday.  I added labels to each bucket so everyone would know what flavor was in each bucket.

The Entertainment

I ordered a Little Mermaid Bounce House, which helped entertain the older kids.  I also had blankets out with tons of toys for the babies.  It was so much fun to see all the babies playing next to each other in our yard!

Baby Naming

We were struggling with when to do my daughter's baby naming.  I didn't want to do it right after she was born, because I was exhausted.  Then, it was my son's birthday, and I didn't want to do both parties back to back.  Then the celebrations started for my brother's wedding - showers, bachelorette parties, the wedding, and before I knew it, my daughter's first birthday party was only six months away.  Then someone suggested that I do the naming at the first birthday.  Brilliance!  We did not have to invite everyone twice, and it really added something special to my daughter's first birthday party.

We chose a Rabbi who is also a Cantor and has a beautiful voice.  She also teaches the music class at my son's school, and she is great with kids.  Before the ceremony, she got the kids singing and dancing.  They had a great time.

We had everyone stand in a circle in our yard during the ceremony.  Then the Rabbi suggested that we have our son help his sister perform her first mitzvah.  We passed out coins to our guests before we got into the circle, and we had my son collect the coins.  We set aside the coins, and when our daughter is old enough, she will choose which organization she wants to donate the money too.

My favorite part of the ceremony was that we had each of our immediate family members (together with their families) give our daughter their blessings and wishes.

Cake

For my daughter's smash cake, I got a small aquarium cake from a local grocery store.

I also made small cupcakes for the kids (I find they are never patient enough to wait for the cake to be cut, and they don't need more than a few bites of cake - most of them just want the frosting).  I put the marshmallow fish from the smores goldfish pack on top of the small cupcakes.  Then I made some larger cupcakes for the top.  I made some mermaid tails (from melted chocolate), and use the image of my daughter as a mermaid as the centerpiece for the cupcakes.

I also got sheet cakes (plain but delicious), and I had someone cut the cake in the kitchen while we were singing happy birthday so that it could be passed out right after we finished singing.

The Favors

If you have read any of my party posts, you know I am not a big fan of favors.  Despite my general anti-favors attitude, I was excited about the favors for my daughters party.  My daughter always has a bow in her hair.  She gets a lot of compliments on her bows, and our friends often ask us where we get them.  I decided it would be fun to make bows for the girls, but I needed to tie into the Little Mermaid theme.  I printed out pictures of Ariel, cut a slit by her hair and slid in the bow.  For the boys, I printed out pictures of Prince Eric, cut slits in the picture, and slid in a bow tie.  I think most of the guests have gotten use out of the favors.  They were very inexpensive (I spent less than $1 per favor).

My Baby Boy is One!

My husband claims I only wanted a baby so that I could have an excuse to throw more parties.  Although that's not entirely true, I do love a good party, and I was so excited to put together this Sesame Street Themed Birthday Party to celebrate my son's first birthday.

Theme
I really wanted to pick a theme that my son would enjoy.  He really loved Elmo and Sesame Street, and I thought he would respond well to the characters he loved so much.

Decor
One thing I didn't think about when I chose the theme, is that all the Sesame Street characters are licensed, and the costs for the stuffed animals and other decorations started to add up quickly.  So I decided to stick mainly with bold colors:  red, yellow, green, and blue, and I added touches of Sesame Street to remind people there was a theme.  I also rented a large bounce house that came decorated with Sesame Street characters.

One of the best decorations I got was the these easy peel off wall stickers and these ones of different Sesame Street characters.  I placed a couple on the front door to greet guests, and scattered the rest of them around the walls in my house.  I even backed one of the Oscar stickers with a thick piece of foam board, and stuck it to the ice bucket to make it look like Oscar and his trash bin.

These were a very affordable way to decorate.  I spent more on some of the stuffed animals then I spent on all the stickers.  The best part is that after the party, I removed the stickers from the various places I put them, and I used them to decorate a wall in my son's playroom.

I got inexpensive large outdoor blankets in blue and green (which we still use all the time) and spread toys all around them, to create a large play area for the babies.   I made a similar play area in our living room because the weather forecast was on the colder side (with a chance of rain), but the weather ended up being so nice, that we moved the entire play area outside.  We also had the bouncy house.  I was going to do an Elmo coloring station, but I ran out of time.  We really didn't need it though.
Play area mid-set-up

I ordered 100 balloons (for delivery!) and I spread them around the edge of our yard, and used them for centerpieces (I tied the balloons to fish bowls full of goldfish snacks and I tied little Elmo balloon weights to the tops of the bowls).  I also left some loose balloons floating around inside our house and the kids were excited to play with them and be able to take one home.

Food
The party was in the afternoon, but I figured that a lot of the guests (especially the ones with babies of their own) would head to the party without having lunch, so I went ahead and did a lunch buffet, and I also had tables with snack foods (for adults and for kids).

  • I did a sandwich bar, so that everyone could maker their own sandwich.  I had assorted breads, cheeses, condiments, cold cuts, and various toppings.  I even put out a toaster for those that preferred their bread toasted.  I decorated the buffet with Sesame Street characters (which now live in our playroom), and I also made special labels for the condiments that used a picture of my son sitting on Sesame Street with Big Bird and Elmo (I also used the image on the invitation):

I'm still not sure why, but we ran out of the fruit salad quick!  (and I refilled it three times).  It was just mango, strawberries, grapes, and blueberries.

For the kids snack table I filled plastic buckets in primary colors with puffs, mum-mums, string cheese, and goldfish.  I also had a snack table for adults with my tomato lentil dip with crackers, assorted trail mixes, and other snacks that were easy to put together.

For dessert we had vanilla cupcakes and chocolate cake (and of course, there was a smashcake for the birthday boy!).  I stayed away from food coloring for the cupcakes, so I used colorful paper for them instead.  I never put the chocolate cake out, and I asked friends to start cutting it before we sang happy birthday, so that we could serve it right after.

Drinks
I filled large beverage containers with water and Arnold Palmer's.  We also filled drink bins with sodas, milks, juices, and beers (our friends without children were grateful).  I had hot water for tea and instant coffee in the kitchen (away from the children), and I had a small sign on the beverage table letting my guests know to check inside in the kitchen for hot beverages.

I had sippy cups for the kids, as well as straws and lids for the cups.

Favors
For the kids' favors, I packed red, green, and blue gift bags with sunglasses, bubbles, mum-mums, and mini bag of goldfish.  Sort of a mini-version of our party in a to-go bag.  For the adults, I had a Cookie Monster Cookie Bar.  I got a pretty good assortment of different cookies (including girl scout cookies and cookies from a famous local cookie store).  I found great inexpensive jars at Target, and I decorated them with ribbon and labels.  The jars were a great find and I have already used them for other parties we have had.
